Levada do Rei (PR18)

About the place

Levada do Rei (PR18) is a picturesque hiking trail on the island of Madeira that runs along an irrigation channel. The starting point is near the water treatment station in the São Jorge area. The trail passes through an exotic forest growing along the channel and leads to the deeply forested Ribeiro Bonito. The route is about 5 km one way (approximately 10 km round trip) with an elevation gain of about 100 m and usually takes 2–3 hours. Along the walk, you will see laurel forests, a cascading waterfall, a tunnel under the path, and beautiful surrounding scenery. Comfortable shoes are recommended, and some sections may be wet — it’s advisable to bring a raincoat or umbrella. This is an ideal choice for both experienced and less prepared hikers who want to enjoy the nature of Madeira.
