Lomagnupur Scenic Spot

Lomagnupur Scenic Spot

About the place

Lómagnúpur is one of the most arresting sights on the drive between Vík and the glaciers of southeast Iceland. Its flat-topped móberg wall rises some 767 metres above the black sands of Skeiðarársandur — built under an ice sheet, not carved from basalt. An old landslide marks its foot near the historic farm of Núpsstaður. Icelanders know it from Njáls saga, where the chieftain Flosi dreams of a giant striding from the cliff. You don't climb it — you pull over on the Ring Road and let the scale register.
