Stifluvatn Lake
About the place
Stífluvatn lies deep in Fljót, one of the quieter corners of northern Iceland, its still water reflecting steep grassy slopes. The lake is partly man-made: when the Skeiðsfoss hydro station was dammed in the 1940s, the rising water drowned the farmed Stífla valley and left the broad lake that stands there today. The real draw is the drive — a scenic, remote mountain road most travellers skip. In winter the surface freezes into a sheet of ice ringed by snow.
