Stykkisholmur town has a historic centre with colorful wooden houses in Danish style. It has been an important trading hub since the 16th century. The harbour is decorated by the rocky island Sugandisey, connected to the shore by a causeway. Visitors can climb to the red lighthouse on Sugandisey for panoramic views of the Breidafjordur islands. Stykkisholmur town is known for its modern church and eco-friendly initiatives, being the first in Iceland certified by EarthCheck. The town also gained worldwide fame as a filming location for "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty," representing Greenland.
