Vikurskard Pass
About the place
Until 2018, every car on the Ring Road east of Akureyri had to climb Víkurskarð, the pass over the Vaðlaheiði heath between the fjord and the Fnjóskadalur valley. It was steep and, in winter, treacherous, so a tunnel was bored under the mountain to carry the main road. The old pass road remains a slow summer detour, with sweeping views over Eyjafjörður and Akureyri before it drops into the valley.
