Mogán

Mogán covers 172 km² of Gran Canaria's southwestern corner, making it the second-largest municipality on the island by area, and most of its 21,000 or so people live along the Atlantic shore. A string of resorts runs down that coast from Arguineguín through Puerto Rico to Puerto de Mogán, a fishing harbour of low white houses cut through by canals. The town of Mogán itself sits inland, about 8 km up from the sea. Travellers come for the dry southern sun, the beaches and the harbour.

When to go

High season

Nov – Mar

Winter sun season: the coastal resorts are at their fullest while northern Europe is cold and dark.

Shoulder

Apr – Jun

Long, settled days on the southern coast, with the resorts quieter than in winter.

High season

Jul – Aug

The hottest stretch, when Spanish holidaymakers fill the beaches and the bare coast offers little shade at midday.

Shoulder

Sep – Oct

The sea holds its summer warmth and the beaches thin out before the winter crowd arrives.

How long to stay

A week suits a beach stay based on the coast at Arguineguín, Puerto Rico or Puerto de Mogán, with one day kept for the inland town of Mogán, about 8 km up from the sea. From a base elsewhere in the south of Gran Canaria, a single day covers the harbour and canals of Puerto de Mogán.

Getting around

The GC-1 motorway runs through the south of the municipality and ties its coastal resorts to the rest of Gran Canaria; Las Palmas lies about 40 km to the north-east. The town of Mogán sits about 8 km inland and 11 km north of Puerto Rico, away from the motorway, so reaching it means leaving the coast road behind.
