Bjolfur Mountain Avalanche Barriers
About the place
Mount Bjólfur rises 1085 metres straight above Seyðisfjörður in East Iceland, and its steep face has buried the town in snow before — the 1885 avalanche killed 24 people. From 2003, huge earthwork dams were built to steer slides away from the houses, and the service road up to them is now the town's main viewpoint. A 5 km gravel track leaves road 93 on the Fjarðarheiði pass and climbs in switchbacks to a terrace beside the barriers, with the fjord below.
