Bjolfur Mountain Avalanche Barriers

Bjolfur Mountain Avalanche Barriers

About the place

Bjolfur Mountain Avalanche Barriers are large-scale engineering structures built on the slopes above Seydisfjordur in eastern Iceland. The barriers were constructed to protect the town from frequent and destructive snow avalanches descending from Mount Bjolfur. Made of reinforced earth, stone, and steel, they redirect avalanche flows away from residential areas. A mountain road leads up to the structures and is often used by hikers and cyclists. From the barriers, visitors can observe the fjord landscape and the town layout below.
