Fagrifoss Waterfall

The drive is half of the visit. Road F206 heads for the Lakagígar craters, and the waterfall sits almost on it, 24 km (15 mi) out from Kirkjubæjarklaustur. The route crosses river fords, and the water is the deciding factor: one driver got through the first ford in a low 4x4, looked at the second and turned back. Those who cross find a high cascade falling over steep black volcanic cliffs. There are few visitors here, and early in the morning there may be no one else at all. From the parking area the walk to the falls is easy. A separate path drops into the canyon below, and that one is long.

• 4x4 only. Access requires fording a river on F206. A two-wheel-drive car cannot make the trip.
• Two fords. The second is the harder one. Depth varies from year to year, and drivers have turned back at it.
• No public transport. No bus serves F206. The only way in is your own or a hired 4x4.
• Wind. The site is open ground, and on a windy day the wind is strong enough to cut the stop short.
• Not wheelchair accessible. There is no adapted entrance.

There is no public transport. Fagrifoss lies 24 km (15 mi) from Kirkjubæjarklaustur and 40 km (25 mi) from Laki, on road F206 towards the Lakagígar craters. The road crosses river fords, and a 4x4 is needed for them. The waterfall is almost on the road: there is a parking area, and the walk from it to the falls is easy. A second path descends into the canyon below the fall and takes far longer.

Better: early morning. Avoid: strong wind, and any time the fords are running high.

Mornings are the quiet slot here, and arriving early can mean having the fall to yourself. The road is the variable, not the waterfall: in September 2024 it was in good shape, in October 2023 the last crossing was not easy. Wind is the other one, and on a bad day it is fierce enough to end the stop early.
