Fagrifoss Waterfall

Fagrifoss Waterfall

About the place

Fagrifoss — the name means “the beautiful waterfall” — is a tall, graceful fall on the Geirlandsá river in the South Iceland highlands, on the rough F206 track towards the Laki craters. The water slips over a smooth lip and splits into several strands, fanning out as it drops down dark, near-black volcanic cliffs into a narrow gorge. The only way in is a summer drive by 4x4 across an unbridged, river-crossed mountain road, which keeps the falls quiet and hard-won.
