Flogufoss Waterfall

The view is the reason to come. Flogufoss drops through a valley, and from the way in the falls, the valley floor and the fjord mountains behind them line up in one view. The area is remote and it stays empty — one visitor found no other tourists there at all. There are two places worth standing: the foot of the falls, reached by scrambling over rocks, and the top, up a short steep slope. Neither is a built viewpoint, and nothing here is fenced or paved. Sheep graze the ground you walk across.

• Vehicle: Route 966 and the other three-digit roads nearby are in poor shape. Recent visits recommend a 4x4; an earlier one managed the gravel with care.
• Navigation: Nothing is signposted and the quad-bike track is easy to lose; one visitor lost it twice on the way in.
• Footwear: The hike is slippery and there is a river to cross. Wear proper boots.
• Winter: The stopping place and the route are hard to make out in winter, and the road is very slippery. One visitor turned back.

Reaching Flogufoss is a drive and then a walk. Stay on the Ring Road as long as you can, then turn onto Route 95 and then onto Route 966. The three-digit roads in this area are rough, and a short gravel section leads in from the main road. Google's directions have sent drivers wrong here, so go by the road numbers. There is no car park at the end: cars pull up by a small table beside the road that gives no direction to the falls. From there the walk takes 15 to 25 minutes across open ground on a quad-bike track, with a river to cross.

Better: the snow-free months, when the quad-bike track is visible and the river can be crossed.

Avoid: winter.

In winter the stopping place and the route are hard to make out, and the road turns very slippery. One visitor came in winter, could not find the way in and gave up. Nothing is signposted in any season, so daylight and dry ground do most of the work of finding the falls.
