Nykurhylsfoss (Sveinsstekksfoss)

Nykurhylsfoss is the last waterfall on the river Fossá before it reaches the sea, an easy stop off the Ring Road northwest of Djúpivogur. Signs also call it Sveinsstekksfoss. The water has a pale glacial-blue cast. Its name comes from a nykur, a folklore water-horse said to lure people onto its back and drown them in the pool below. Holy water at a nearby christening is said to have driven it off. A two-minute walk reaches the lower fall; a rougher path climbs to more cascades upstream.
