Gigvatnsvatn Lake fills a circular volcanic crater formed by past eruptions. The intense green color is caused by minerals suspended in the water. The crater slopes descend gently toward the shoreline. The lake is easily viewed from the rim without special equipment. The surrounding area shows clear traces of volcanic activity.
