Grotta Island Lighthouse

Grotta Island Lighthouse

About the place

The Grotta Island Lighthouse stands on a small island connected to the mainland by a narrow sandy isthmus. It can be reached only during low tide. The landscape is quiet and dramatic, with black rocks covered in seaweed and the endless blue of Faxafloi bay. The lighthouse provides a strikingly otherworldly view, especially at sunset or under the Northern Lights. It is a protected area where many seabirds, including terns and waders, nest. Nearby is the small geothermal foot pool “Kvika,” offering warmth while gazing at the Snaefellsjokull glacier on the horizon.
