Graenavatn Lake
About the place
Grænavatn is a maar — a crater blown open by a single volcanic explosion, then filled with water — about 45 metres deep in the Krýsuvík geothermal belt. Sulphur compounds, minerals and heat-loving algae give it the dense green behind its name, literally “green lake”, though under a grey sky it looks almost black. Most drivers come across it unexpectedly: a bottle-green oval right beside the road, between Kleifarvatn and the Seltún mud pots.
