Lodmundarfjordur

Lodmundarfjordur

About the place

Loðmundarfjörður sits on Iceland's remote east coast, one of several fjords whose farms emptied over the last century; the final residents left in 1973. A broad green valley runs between steep rhyolite mountains down to a black-sand shore, with a small wooden church at Klyppstaður among grassed-over farm walls. There are no shops, no fuel and barely a road — you come by a rough mountain F-road in high summer or on foot along the Víknaslóðir trails.
