Selfoss Waterfall

Selfoss Waterfall

About the place

Where Dettifoss thunders through one narrow gorge, Selfoss does the opposite. Just upstream, the Jökulsá á Fjöllum splits into dozens of channels and spills over a long, curving basalt lip — far wider than it is tall. The result is a horseshoe of glacier-grey water framed by dark columns, quieter than the giant downstream. Both sit in the Jökulsárgljúfur canyon in Vatnajökull National Park and share the same trails, so most people walk to the pair on one loop.
