About the place

Stórasúla is a solitary cone rising to 693 m in the highland interior of South Iceland, northwest of the Mýrdalsjökull ice cap. An extinct volcano long cloaked in moss and grass, it glows green against the black sands of Mælifellssandur that stretch away to the south. That contrast makes it a landmark on the Laugavegur trail, and the Hvanngil hut sits at its foot. Its steep flanks have no marked path to the top, so most people admire it rather than climb.
