Markarfljótsgljúfur Canyon

About the place
Markarfljótsgljúfur is a canyon the glacial Markarfljót river has cut some 200 metres into Iceland's southern highlands. Its dark walls are streaked green with moss and split by side-gullies and thin waterfalls, the pale silty river far below. It runs about four kilometres near the Emstrur hut, and its rims are a favourite detour for walkers on the Laugavegur trail. There is no railing or platform, and reaching the rims means rough, summer-only 4x4 tracks.
