Thorsmork Valley

Thorsmork Valley

About the place

Þórsmörk — 'Thor's Wood' — is a sheltered highland valley cradled between three glaciers in South Iceland: Eyjafjallajökull, Mýrdalsjökull and Tindfjallajökull. Screened from the wind, it grows birch scrub, moss and wildflowers that are rare elsewhere in Iceland, threaded by braided glacial rivers and steep ridges. It is a major hiking hub — the end of the Laugavegur trek and the foot of climbs like Valahnúkur — yet lies beyond unbridged rivers, open only in summer.
