A canyon and river view in the Thorsmork mountains, reached only on foot and usually empty even in August.

Stakkholtsgja Viewpoint is a scenic spot in the Thorsmork mountains of South Iceland, inland from Skogar. It looks over a canyon and the river running through it. No vehicle reaches the point itself: the nearest parking areas lie about 1.1 km and 1.2 km away, and the rest of the way is walked. The site is open at all hours and takes few visitors, including in high summer.

What makes it special

The view is of a canyon and the river running through it, in the Thorsmork mountains inland from Skogar. The draw is how empty it stays. The landscape is often there for one party alone, in July and August as much as at any other time of year. No vehicle reaches the point, so the last kilometre or so is walked from the parking areas, and the two nearby stops are no closer.

The last stretch is on foot. No vehicle reaches the viewpoint, so count the walk in both directions when planning the day.

Vehicles get no closer than about 1.1 km. Two parking areas sit roughly 1.1 km and 1.2 km from the viewpoint, and the rest of the way is walked. The Langidalur and Básar stops lie at about 1.1 km and 1.4 km, so the final stretch is much the same either way.
