Stakkholtsgjá Canyon

About the place
Stakkholtsgjá is a striking slot canyon located in the Þórsmörk Nature Reserve in southern Iceland. The canyon extends for about 2 km and reaches depths of up to 100 meters. A narrow stream flows along the canyon floor between steep palagonite and basalt walls covered in vivid green moss. As you proceed deeper, the canyon gradually narrows, leading to a hidden waterfall at the end. The contrast of black volcanic sand and lush mossy cliffs creates an otherworldly, fairytale-like atmosphere. The trail includes multiple shallow stream crossings and can be slippery, requiring careful footing and proper footwear. Stakkholtsgjá is accessible mainly in summer, and reaching it usually requires a 4×4 vehicle due to rough F-roads and river crossings.
