Ytri Tunga Beach

Ytri Tunga Beach

About the place

Ytri Tunga is one of Iceland's few golden-sand beaches, on the south coast of the Snæfellsnes peninsula. People come for the seals: harbour and grey seals haul out on the low rocks just offshore, most often at low tide, when they climb up to rest and sunbathe. The sand is pale gold, a rarity in a land of black volcanic beaches. On clear days the Snæfellsjökull glacier rises inland behind the dunes. The road runs close by, and the stop is easy and family-friendly.
