Hornstrandir Nature Reserve

Hornstrandir is the roadless northern tip of Iceland's Westfjords — 580 square kilometres of tundra, sea cliffs and empty fjords, a protected reserve since 1975 with no permanent residents since the 1950s. In summer you reach it only by boat from Ísafjörður or Norðurfjörður, or on foot. It is the country's only sanctuary where the Arctic fox is fully protected, so they roam the open tundra unafraid. Plan it as a multi-day trek, not a quick detour.
