Souleheimajokull Glacier

Souleheimajokull Glacier

About the place

Souleheimajokull Glacier is a large outlet glacier descending from the Myrdalsjokull ice cap in southern Iceland. Its surface is marked by dark ash layers left by past volcanic eruptions, creating a dramatic striped appearance. At the glacier front lies a meltwater lagoon with floating ice blocks that slowly change shape and color. The area is popular for guided glacier walks and ice climbing thanks to easy access from the Ring Road. Rapid retreat of the ice clearly illustrates the visible impact of climate change in this region.
