Souleheimajokull Glacier

Sólheimajökull is one of Iceland's most accessible outlet glaciers, a broad tongue of ice creeping off the Mýrdalsjökull ice cap toward the South Coast. Volcanic ash from past eruptions stripes its surface grey and white, and a meltwater lagoon at the snout holds ice that shifts through the season. A gravel road runs almost to the ice, the classic base for a guided glacier walk or ice climb. Its steady retreat is a clear sign of a warming climate.
